Hello from Mackay! - Paradoxicdomino - Friday 25-Dec-2015
Hi all. I'm actually fairly new to this whole world and had only heard of the 501st in passing.
It turns out I work with a legion member and had my arm twisted into wearing his Jawa for "a short film thing we're doing tonight, and you look the right height". Well, a few hours later and I was hooked. After talking with him and Jag, the 501st certainly appeal to me on many levels. The more I look into what the 501st do, the more I want to become involved.
We did the short film which aired before the premiere earlier in the month, and I took the opportunity to wear the Jawa again. The buzz from taking photos with the kids and adults alike was just intoxicating!
So here I am I guess. I'm currently working on convincing the Mrs. to let me start building a costume, we shall see how far that goes in the next few months. In the meantime, research and reading!

Hi Ben and welcome.
What costume did you have in mind? Here is a current list of the approvable costumes in the Costume Reference Library (CRL). http://www.501st.com/databank/Costuming:CRLbyname Have a look I am sure you can find something that appeals to you. Once you do find a costume read the CRL and sign up on the detachment for that costume to help you research it fully. Stay away from ebay.
While you are reading have a read of this thread, it will give you some insight into the membership requirements etc.

I've been looking through the CRL and I'm pretty sure I'll be working towards ANH TK hero costume. I've signed up on whitearmor.net and have been checking things out there as well.
I'm in the middle of moving house (perfect time of year right???) So nothing much will happen till the gibblets are back at school. Until then, research is my friend!
