Payneys Droid Factory

So, you all know about my R2. Well now, with help from the talented guys in the R2 builders club, am embarking on my next major project.

That is what the builders have come up with as the official (before someone can accurately map the real droid) dome of BB-8. It has been 3D printed for ease of manufacture, and light weight. The entire dome with all the hardware weighs just over 2 kilos. I have just received the STL files for the dome, so all I need now is a printer...

The ball and inner carriage are currently in development, and will be entirely (well for the most part) 3D printed. They hope to have it ready before the release of EPVII, so stay tuned.

Looks cool mate. What's the print size required on the largest piece?

They are using an Ultimaker 2. The smallest bed size that can be used for the dome parts is 8" x 8"

No worries, just curious. I'm using the Ultimaker 2 Extended at work for my DC-15a pieces.

Not a big update.

I just received the dome hardware from the U.S.
The high powered Neodymium magnets will hold BB-8's dome on the ball (4 for the dome and 4 for the inner carriage). The dome and carriage will roll on the 6 nylon balls, (3 for the dome, and 3 for the carriage).

I am currently getting the dome & carriage parts printed, hopefully they will be ready by the end of next week.

1:1 scale. The ball is 506mm in diameter, and the dome is 300mm round, so he'll be just over 2 feet tall.

The printing is coming along nicely. This is only the baseplate and antenna.

I just succumbed to the 3D printing gods, sold my soul, and bought a printer. So, soon I'll be able to print my own stuff at an blistering 120mm per second @ 40 micron layers Wink

STAY TUNED...
