Hi scarecrow and welcome the redback garrison forums.
Stormtrooper
I would start off choosing which stormtrooper you want to do there are a few to choose from check out the Costume Reference Library or CRL:

Head over to First Imperial Stormtrooper Detachment or FISD to do all your research:

Before you purchase anything please look at the vetted sellers of armour on FISD. There are sellers out there who do state that they are 501st approvable but some are just using the 501st brand to sell stuff. Please check with the folks on FISD or post up here first before you part with your hard earned dollars. Here is a good link to have a read through regarding armour seller:

When you make contact with the sellers make sure that you give as much detail about yourself like height, measurements of biceps, thighs, waist etc so that you know that you will get a kit that will fit your body type. You don't want a kit that will be either too small or too large.

Sign up on the Pathfinders Detachment http://forum.bikerscout.net/index.php?act=home to do your research on hard armour and where to purchase it from. Again give as much info as you can to the seller to make sure the kit will fit.
We have a few scouts here in the Redbacks who might be able to point you in the right direction of a supplier for the hard armour.
We do have a quite a few good seamstresses here in the garrsion who can help with the soft parts, so when you get close just ask and we can pass on their names.
