Costume query
#1
Hey there Sithsters, how are you all?
I'm currently putting together a costume, and saw this sleeveless jacket which looks very cool and Sithy, but worried it won't fit in with the costuming rules (I'll be getting a jacket with black around the waist, not grey, and removing the zips). Do all the costumes have to be directly related to characters within the Star Wars movies/TV shows/games, or is there some leeway?
Look forward to your replies!

If you're referring to 501st approval standards, I'm afraid the costume must be 100% accurate to a particular existing character. That character can be from the expanded universe, movies, books, cartoons etc - anything that is considered to be a "cannon" source (as in LucasArts/Disney approved or created). You can find all the characters already approved for entry into the 501st here;
http://databank.501st.com/databank/Costuming:CRL

Or if you're up for more of a challenge, you can pick a character who isnt already on that list. All you'll need are 3 cannon reference sources of that character wearing the same outfit. It must show all details of the outfit (front, back and both sides). If its from the movies/cartoon this is pretty easy and they'll accept pictures of the character onscreen. If its from the books/comics/EU, its a little trickier. You'll need 3 cannon references of the same outfit, for example; book cover picture + comic book appearance + sideshow figurine.

The 501st is just the bad guys, and whilst the Rebel Legion accepts custom made original Jedi, the 501st can only approve existing characters. If you have your heart absolutely set on doing a Sith, go for it! There is a seperate group for Sith outfits - http://www.thedarkempire.org/ but Im not aware if they have any presence here in Brisbane.

Even so, absolutely nothing stops you from making whatever you want to make for your own costume, and just enjoying conventions in it like other cosplayers do ^.^ Many of us have personal non 501st/RL costumes too.

Eeeep I talked your ear off-! Sorry! I hope it helped!

Welcome to the forums , To answer your question , it's what Tirillia has said. If you choose to do a new character also make sure your reference pictures are head to toe and details are clear.
Good luckDoppeldaumen1

Hi and welcome.

Basically you can use one of the many Costume Reference Library (CRL) for a costume, here is a link to a list of all currently approved costumes:
http://databank.501st.com/databank/Costuming:CRLbyname

If you did want to branch out and do a costume that isn't on this list great, so long as you follow the guidelines setout here:
http://databank.501st.com/databank/Costu...erApproval
and here:
http://databank.501st.com/databank/Costu...oTheLegion

In summary:
- Must conform to human constraints, very few droids would fit into this category.
- The references must be licenced LFL/Disney no deviant art or fan art.
- Your references must capture a 360 degree view of the costume in detail ie full body front/back/sides.
- It can be from a game but cannot be player customised.
- No generic Siths, sorry.

I don't think i'll be coming up with a costume anytime soon,
I was going to go for either a count docu or Darth Sirius emperor before he became deformed but I wouldn't know where to buy the stuff except ebay or pay some ridiculous amount to get it made?
The Rules seem to say haloween costumes are out, so that's every shop that sells costumes, so where do you buy, i'm not going to sew it myself.
oh well.
